Anchorage - Today, the legislature failed to override the Governor’s veto of HB 69, the education funding bill.
“For the third year in a row parents, educators, and students have been forced to watch our lawmakers debate if funding education is worth it,” said NEA-Alaska President Tom Klaameyer. “It is extremely disappointing the Governor vetoed yet another education funding bill and disheartening that the legislature could not override that veto. To be clear, we have some true public education champions in Juneau who have been fighting tirelessly to ensure Alaska’s students have the resources they need—but not enough legislators seem to care about our kids' future.”
NEA-Alaska remains committed to advocating for adequate funding for public education. After vetoing HB 69, Governor Dunleavy introduced a bill with a proposed $560 increase to the Base Student Allocation—a move that would still result in cuts to public schools. At this funding level, dedicated educators would lose their jobs, school sports would be eliminated, and immersion programs could be shut down. Our students deserve better.
NEA-Alaska looks forward to continuing the conversation about the critical importance of fully funding public education and working with both the legislature and the Governor to find a path forward.
