Anchorage - Today Governor Dunleavy vetoed yet another education funding bill. House Bill 57 was a tri-partisan effort from the legislature to increase the Base Student Allocation (BSA) by $700. This is the second bill of its kind the governor has vetoed this legislative session, and the fourth veto of education funding since he took office.
“It is abundantly clear Governor Dunleavy does not care about Alaska students or public schools,” said Tom Klaameyer, President of NEA- Alaska. “To veto not one, but two bills this year to fund education is not only shameful and embarrassing, but it is a blatant disregard of his constitutional duties. Our schools are in critical need of funding; I encourage every legislator to come together to send this governor a message and override his veto.”
Alaska schools have been flat funded for almost a decade. This legislative session, hundreds of teachers, parents, and education advocates across the state have come together to support an increase in the Base Student Allocation.
