Jump Start

Jump Start toward National Board Certification

NEA-Alaska Jump Start is a 4-day workshop that provides support for educators planning to pursue National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). National Board Certification (NBC) is recognized as a national standard of quality professional achievement. Jump Start is a key component of NEA-Alaska’s mission to provide quality public education for Alaskan children through continued development of its education professionals.  

Jump Start, taught by National Board Certified teachers, is designed to prepare participants for the rigorous process of NBC through which they will describe, analyze, and reflect upon their practice. Participants will become familiar with the foundation, components and requirements of NBC.   

This workshop is open to NEA-Alaska members only. 

Note: Three years of teaching experience is required to apply for the National Board Certification assessment but is not required to participate in Jump Start.  

If more than 20 educators register for the course, a wait list will be created. Additionally, priority will be given to current National Board Certification candidates.   

Workshop Schedule:   8:30 am — 4:30 pm, Tuesday, May 30 through Friday, June 2, 2023.

  • Workshop Location:NEA-Alaska Office; 4100 Spenard Rd., Anchorage
  • Maximum Capacity for this workshop: 20 Participants
  • Target Audience: Pre-K through 12th grade – educators, teachers, librarians and school counselors (certificated employees)

GENERAL INFORMATION ON TRAVEL, LODGING, MEALS & UAA COURSE CREDIT: 

  • Travel
    *We have already reached the limit of the first ten members to qualify for the travel reimbursement. You may still attend, but travel will be paid for out of pocket with no reimbursement.  NEA-Alaska will reimburse up to $500 towards airfare (best deal) for 10 members (first come, first served) who live outside of the greater Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley areas. Mileage can be reimbursed at current IRS rate of 65.5 cents per mile not to exceed the equivalent of a super saver airfare, if you decide to drive. Attendees will keep track of the mileage and submit that on the reimbursement form that will be provided at the session. Personal travel expenses will not be reimbursed.
  • Lodging
    Overnight accommodations will be provided to participants upon request, in accordance with NEA-Alaska’s travel policy, encouraging double occupancy. Single occupancy will be permitted. If a participant chooses to extend travel beyond the necessary and reasonable allotted time (arriving early or departing late), reimbursement will not include the additional expense incurred. You will present your own credit card upon check-in for incidentals. The nightly hotel charges will be direct-billed to NEA-Alaska.
  • Meals
    NEA-Alaska will provide breakfast and lunch each day of the workshop for the attending member. Dinner is on your own and will not be reimbursed by NEA-Alaska.   

Receipts for all expenses must be attached to your completed travel reimbursement form and submitted to our Juneau office (Attn: Lynn Metcalfe 201 Main St #300 Juneau, AK 99801).

    UAA Professional Development Graduate Level Credits: 2 (Optional) 
    Cost:  $99 
    Course credit applications will be available at the workshop.
