2026 Fall Alaska Studies Course

NEA-Alaska is partnering with See Stories and UAA to offer an asynchronous 3-credit Alaska Studies course for our members. This course is the pilot of a continued Alaska Studies course offering, and for Fall 2026 it will be limited to 20 participants. This course will be discounted for NEA-Alaska members.

Course Title: ED A545K: Alaska Studies for Educators: An Examination of Conflicting Perspectives

Course Description: This course focuses on the Primary Source Histories of Indigenous Enslavement and Colonization in Alaska. In this course you will explore history of Indigenous enslavement and colonization in Alaska through original research and primary source material. The course will include guest presentations from Alaska Native scholars and culture bearers, historians, archivists, and educators. 

The course will use a culturally responsive, trauma-informed lens. You will explore cultural bias in archives and primary sources and strategies for how to Indigenize primary source research in the classroom.

Credits: This course is a 3 credit professional development level course through University of Alaska Anchorage Professional & Continuing Education (PACE). This course meets the Alaska Studies course requirement of the State of Alaska DEED for teacher certification.  

The course is asynchronous. Participants will work through the course content on their own (readings, video lectures, reflection writing) and complete assignments. 

Course Dates: Tuesday, October 13, 2026 - Tuesday, December 15, 2026 

Cost: $70 for 3 credits. NEA-Alaska is offering a discount to members, $49 off the regular PACE price.

Dates & Deadlines

• October 1: NEA-Alaska will notify you if we are able to offer you a space in the class and share UAA registration information with those accepted.

• October 7: Deadline to complete the UAA registration.

• October 13: The course begins. A required Zoom orientation will be held 4-5 pm. See Stories will email instructions for accessing the course content online. 

• October 13 - December 15: You will work through the course material on your own. A suggested pacing guide will be provided. Several optional Zooms will be provided.

• December 15: The course ends. Final assignments must be submitted. A suggested Zoom will be offered for final presentations.

  Yes! (Ask your school district for details) The 3 credit course is listed as ED 545K from UAA’s Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) program. 

• Can I use these credits for a degree I am pursuing?

  No. (Ask your advisor or UAA’s PACE department for more details).  

• When will we receive the credits? 

  It can take UAA a couple weeks to process the credits. Expect to have them available by January 2027. 

• I’m not a history teacher/ not a classroom teacher. Am I still eligible? 

  Yes! As long as you are a member of NEA-Alaska, we welcome classroom teachers of all subjects, certified educators in other roles (librarians). For this pilot course, certified educators are our priority. Future courses will be open to paraprofessionals and other classified staff.  

• Can I become an NEA-Alaska member now and still be eligible for the course?

• How will I access the course?

  See Stories uses an online platform called Teachable. It’s user-friendly and will guide you step by step through the course.

• Can I work at my own pace?

  Yes, a pacing guide will be provided, but you may work at your own pace. You may finish early or start late as long as the required assignments are submitted by the last day of the course.

• Are there required books, materials I will need to purchase?

  No. All of the required readings, films, and materials will be provided. We will share a recommended reading list for those interested in additional sources outside of the course.
